The process is for me; the result is for you. When I am creating, I make choices and decisions based on my own thoughts and feelings, my own judgments of the piece. Here is an example. Lately, I have had people tell me “you should add people to your work.” …or a bird, or animal, etc. It might make some people relate more to my work but it really does not feel right me. It just feels like it doesn’t belong to me. It doesn’t make sense. It is not what I have been inspired by. So I don’t. My choice. For me.
When I start a piece, I do not think to myself “Now what do I think people would like me to make?” I innately become inspired by something I encounter. It is in paying attention to my own personal response to my life and having a desire and ability to put it on paper or canvas which begins the creative process. It is the creative process of putting it down, I feel energized and at peace. I struggle through analyzing the composition, colors, textures, etc. When I have completed it, I feel fulfilled. That is for ME.
The end product is now for YOU. It is my gift to the world. I do not have a hard time allowing someone to take my work because I am done with it! Now I want YOU to get something out of it. Knowing my work connects with another human being brings me joy and positive energy I have a hard time explaining. It feels as if the journey of the invested energy has been completed. I have usually moved on to other creations by the time that happens but that energy I get back from you helps feed my motivation.
It is the process of creating something that I value. It is the product of that process which others value. I create for US. It is a symbiotic relationship.
